It seems that bad things really do come in threes. There were three things that I noticed had a significant impact to the relationship between the French and the English. When France decided not to allow Edward III to succeed the monarchy, things started to unravel between the two countries (strike one). Then, after Edward III recognized Philip VI’s lordship over Aquitaine, Philip violated the treaty by confiscating the duchy (strike two). When the hatred of England boiled over, the French launched attacks on coastal English lands during sea raids (strike three). For all of you baseball fans out there, just know that three strikes normally means that you are out. So, in defense of the English, you can only take so much from someone (or country) before you break. Because of the French’s inability to remain civil and uphold treaties, the English brought destruction upon them. France ultimately took the bulk of the beating, considering almost all battles took place in their country. Both countries gained a stronger pride and community after each boasted important victories.
