PSY206.801 Human Growth and Development                F2016                          Instructor: Vasek

Required form for term paper

Introduction 4-5 pages:

For this section of the paper you must use your textbook (this is to demonstrate that you read/ learned the information in your textbook) – Berger, K.S. 2014, Invitation to the Lifespan 2nded.  New York, NY, Worth Publishers

a-       Informative paragraphs explaining relevant developmental pattern(s)

For example:

If your research article is about the positive and negative effects of media on children’s language you need to summarize the pattern for language development.

If your article is about a substitute caregiver’s effect on attachment security you need to summarize the developmental pattern for attachment.

b-      Informative paragraphs about relevant psychological theory.

For example:

If you are summarizing development of language, the textbook clearly presents several theories explaining the way language comes about.

If you are summarizing attachment, the textbook clearly presents theories explaining why and how we attach to a caregiver.

Must use in-text citation for textbook information (cite both quotations and paraphrasing).

Place author’s last name, page number in parenthesis for example: Attachment is…..(Berk, 232).  Or put author’s name in sentence and page number in parenthesis, example: According to Berger (232).

Cite the source you read, do not list the people the textbook author read.

Analysis of article 4-5 pages (demonstrating knowledge of scientific method)

c-            Give the title of the article and the researcher’s names to start with. Next state the researcher’s hypothesis. If the article does not state “hypothesis was”, look for discussion of:  predicted outcomes or expected change or were testing the effects of….

d-            Method : Case study; Survey; Naturalistic Observation; Laboratory Structured Observation, Quasi-Experiment, or Field Experiment?

Read the methods section of the article. Define the method used and state how features of the research match characteristics of the method.

Example:  The participants answered a series of questions about their behavior and personality. This is characteristic of the survey method, which is defined as….

Discuss benefits of and problems with the method used by the researcher.

Example: Surveys are a good way to obtain quantitative data, this type of data is …..

e-       Developmental Design: was it a Longitudinal, Sequential, or Cross-sectional design?

Define the design and state how features of the research match to characteristics of the design.

Example: A longitudinal design involves studying the same group over time (Berger, 22) and these researchers tested one group of children at 2 years of age and again at 10 years of age.

Discuss benefits of and problems with the design used by the researcher.

Example: Longitudinal studies suffer from declining sample size (Berger 23) and in this study they started with….but ended with….

f-             Participants/Procedure: summarize characteristics of the participants and how study was conducted. This is not simply copying, the discussion in these paragraphs relates to things such as informed consent, random sampling, assignment to groups, sample size and ability to generalize the results.

Example: The researchers obtained consent from the parents. Informed consent is…

g-      Results: read results both in text and in graphs /charts/ tables (do not copy). Explain important findings. Typically you will see a string of numbers and you need to explain the comparison between the groups.

Example:

The research article says: The mean habituated looking times for memory set sizes of one, two, and three were 3.02 s (SD = 0.57), 2.55 s (SD = 0.96), and 2.07 s (SD = 0.34), respectively.

The explanation:  If shown a memory set of one item, infants took 3.02 seconds to habituate and if it was a set of two items the habituation time was 2.55 seconds….

h-            Conclusion: Compare results to the researcher’s hypothesis, did the results support the hypothesis? Were the researcher’s findings consistent with information learned in class?

In-text citation: You must cite the research article in your analysis (same form as citing from the textbook). Research articles have page numbers (do not cite by paragraph).

Cite the source you read (the researcher(s) names) do not list the people the researcher(s) read.

i-        Work cited page:

Must include textbook and research article, may have additional sources as needed (if information is not available in textbook). Use APA on work cited page/be consistent.

Do not cite class notes.

No bullets or numbering.

List is in alphabetical order by last name. For articles with multiple researchers, there is one citation per article (not one citation per author), list the last name and initials of each author in order then the date, title, journal, volume, pages

List is left aligned (not center of page).

Examples:

Textbook form is Last name, first name, date, title, place of publication, publisher
