Compose a thorough list of key considerations that include company structure, budget, and management issues as well as ERP functions and sourcing
Using the Elements of E-business presentation in this unit’s studies, focusing on the tables, pinpoint any areas where you have experience with e-business. Have you been an e-business customer? Have you been involved in the planning of an e-business? Perhaps you’ve worked with shipping systems or information systems in accounting, marketing, or customer service. Or perhaps your experience has been from the customer side. Which of the e-business models described in the Gottschalk article (direct to customer retailer or manufacturer, service provider, portals, auctions, virtual community, content provider, value net integrator, p. 79) are you familiar with as a customer?
Consider this scenario:
You have been appointed to a task force that has been formed to study and make recommendations for the implementation of an enterprise system (ERP) at ABC Corporation. The first scheduled meeting is a brainstorming session for the purpose of defining needs and specifications for the system. Everyone on the task force has been asked to prepare a list of important questions that must be answered and needs that must be addressed before the ERP planning phase can begin. You are relatively new at the company, and so have not been a witness to much of its history. You may choose your own occupational position for this scenario and apply any expertise you wish to the situation; however, do not limit yourself to any one area of concentration.
Compose a thorough list of key considerations that include company structure, budget, and management issues as well as ERP functions and sourcing. Research the differences, advantages, and disadvantages of open source, commercial, and Web-based (software as a service) ERP solutions
This discussion supports the unit assignment. Perform a search for an ERP system with strong supply chain management features and introduce it to your peers. Describe your project organization and then explain why your supply chain software would be a good match for their supply chain needs.
You might consider one that is listed in the required readings by Rogers titled “Supply Chain Software Basics.” Look for systems that provide good information about ERP and supply chain management features on their website. If a site asks for your personal information before giving you information, discard it and find another. Good candidates besides those in the Rogers article are NetSuite™ and Sage™. Consider industry appropriateness—is it general or was it created to fit a certain industry? Some systems, like Microsoft Dynamics and Sage have multiple versions suited to different industries like manufacturing, service, or nonprofit.
Look to see if it has the basic supply chain management features such as warehouse, inventory, labor, and transportation management.
A good analysis of basic supply chain functions is included in the required readings for this unit. As always, support your work using APA citation format
