GNED 1201 Second Assignment Beauty and Monsters in Advertising Requirements: individual assignment Style: Essay style, including proper referencing of sources; must include a copy of the advertisement Length: 3-4 typed, double spaced pages (not including advertisement) Value: 20/25/30% This assignment asks you to consider the ideas of beauty, aesthetics, and ugliness or grotesqueness in the context of advertising, a genre that more often known for using beauty for functional purposes, that is, to sell objects and experiences. Your task is to find a print advertisement that incorporates an element of the grotesque or ugliness in order to sell what it is selling. The advertisement can be for any product or service and can be any size, but it must be a print advertisement (static image). You need to include a copy of the advertisement, or a photograph of the advertisement in the assignment. Begin with a brief explanation of the context of the ad and what it is selling. Explain why we might understand this ad to be ugly or grotesque. Be sure to use the language and concepts we have studied regarding beauty, aesthetics and ugliness in your explanation and to clearly connect your observations to the inferences you’ve made about them. (Recall the observations and inferences worksheet and exercise from class.) Next, analyze how the ugliness or grotesqueness that you have identified in the advertisement relates to the ideals of beauty we’ve discussed in class. Then theorize about how ugliness is used to attract and sell in the advertisement. In other words, drawing upon concepts learned in the course, explain how the advertisement might be successful at selling what it does by using ugly or grotesque imagery. Be sure to properly and fully cite the source for the advertisement using APA or MLA style. ?
