2.3 Summarise the key stages of strategy formulation ie goals setting, evaluation and review referencing a model from literature.    
2.4 Provide examples of the contribution of HR linked to the stages above highlighting business ethics and accountability.

3.1 Provide examples of how business performance may be evaluated, referencing traditional and modern indicators and HR role in Business planning and change management.    
3.2 Explain how different sources of business and contextual data can be assessed and utilised for planning purposes.    

 

On completion of this unit, learners will:

1.    Understand the key contemporary business issues and main external factors affecting different organisations and the impact on HR.

3.    Know how to identify and respond to changes in the business environment.

Your Chief executive has asked you to prepare a report for the board identifying the key contemporary business issues and main external factors affecting the organisation and the impact on HR.  The report should also include how HR strategies and practices are shaped and developed and how to identify and respond to changes in the business environment.

In presenting the report you are expected to have  included:

  • A summary of the contemporary business issues and the main external factors affecting your organisation. Some comments and conclusions on impact of these issues and factors on the HR function in terms of a SWOT analysis.
  • Comment on how the organisational and HR strategies and practices are shaped and developed in response to the external issues, factors and business context.
  • A summary of  the changes in the business environment in terms of a PESTLE analysis
  • A summary of a response to the PESTLE factors including HR’s role in quantifying the responses to planning in the short, medium and long term.

All reference sources should be acknowledged correctly and a bibliography provided where appropriate (these should be excluded from the word count).

2.1 Candidates should, assess a minimum of four factors, two internal and two external, which impact on an organisation’s business and HR function. In so doing they could make reference to:

·         PESTLE factors

·         Internal drivers including, costs, resources and capabilities and SWOT factors

2.1 Candidates should chose a minimum of two of the factors, one internal and one external, identified in 1.1 and analyse their effects on HR within their organisation.
2.2 Candidates should be compare a minimum of three tools for analysing the business environment. This could include:

·         Porter’s value chain

·         PESTEL analysis

·         McKinsey 7s framework

·         Porter’s five force model

·         Boston matrix

·         Value chain analysis

·         Ansoff matrix

·         Force field analysis

·         SWOT Analysis

2.3 Candidates should comment on the stages of formulation and use a model to support this. They should further explore some of the following and what these mean for HR within the organisation:

·         The strategy process, top down or bottom

·         The type of strategy adopted by an organisation, e.g. deliberate or emergent.

2.4 In examining HR’s contribution to business ethics and accountability candidates should make reference to a minimum of three factors that affect HR’s contribution. This could include:

·         Current legislation

·         Corporate and social responsibility

·         Diversity

·         Equal opportunities

·         Local and country culture

·         Sector issues

·         Risk rating

Candidate should evaluate the role of HR in helping an organisation to achieve its aims and goals through business planning and change management. In doing this they should refer to a minimum of three change management and business planning tools and techniques to support their evaluation.

A very good answer could comment on the limitations of models to address all of the dimensions of change and business planning.

3.2 Candidates should make reference to a minimum of four sources of data, two qualitative and two quantitative and assess how this data can be used by HR as part of the planning process.  These sources could be internal or external to the organisation.
